Hajj: A Celebration of Peace

Where am I?

More than 2 million people surround me.  We all have one common goal, one purpose for being here together.  I do not stand out from anyone else.  There are no signs of wealth or greatness upon me.  No Rolex watch or Nike shoes to mark me as a rich person.  I am one person alone, in a sea of humanity.  I am black or white, yellow or brown, the color of my skin is not important.  I am from Europe or Asia or South America, my homeland is any corner of this wide earth.  The people around me are young and old, male and female, rich and poor.  We represent humankind in our diversity, yet we are united.  We are unity in diversity.

I am at Hajj

Hajj is one of the five pillars of Islam.  Muslims declare that there is no god worthy of worship but Allah and that Muhammad is His messenger; they pray, they fast, they pay the obligatory charity, and they go to Hajj.  Hajj is a pilgrimage to the city of Makah in Saudi Arabia.  At the mosque and in the surrounding area, Muslims perform prayers and rituals.  Hajj is an obligatory act performed once in a lifetime by all mentally, physically, and financially able Muslims.

“And Hajj (pilgrimage to Makah) to the House (Kaba) is a duty that mankind owes to God, those who can afford the expenses (for one’s conveyance, provision, and residence) ; and whoever disbelieves then God stands not in need of any of mankind, jinn and all that exists” (Quran 3:97)

This year , Hajj is in the middle of November.  Muslims from all over the world will gather to worship God.  They arrive in Saudi Arabia, by plane, bus, car, etc.  Some endure great hardship, others merely buy a first class ticket, but they come as equals.  People make this journey prepared to stand at the House of God (or Kaba) and affirm their love for God and His religion of Islam.

“And proclaim to humankind the Hajj (pilgrimage).  They will come to you on foot and on every lean camel, they will come from every deep and distant (wide) mountain highway (to perform Hajj)” (Quran 22:27)

The Hajj is several days of total devotion to the One God.  Muslims come together to celebrate His praises, ask for His forgiveness and demonstrate unity for His sake alone.

Throughout the Muslim world, Hajj has come to symbolize unity.  Although Muslims may be disunited due to many outside influences,  such as money, politics, border disputes or other worldly concerns.  Hajj is a great leveler.  At Hajj, all Muslims are equal; nothing about the rituals they perform makes one person better than another.

More than 2 million Muslims stand in one place, wearing the same simple clothing, following the same rituals and saying the same words.  They are united in their devotion to God.  The black man stands next to the white man and they call on God with one voice.  The king stands beside the pauper and they declare their submission to the will of God using the same words.

Muslims from every corner of the globe are united in their submission to the will of God.  They cry out as if with one voice, “Here I am O God, here I am at your service, and You have no partner.  Here I am.  All praise, grace, and dominion belong to You.  You have no partner”.  This supplication is said repeatedly by the pilgrims.  It is their answer to God’s call for the Muslims to perform Hajj.

These words are repeated with joy and reverence by all, regardless of status or class.  Some people are so overcome with emotion that they weep, others feel elated and happier then they have ever felt before.  Every person there feels that he is one person, alone among millions answering God’s call and God hears his supplication and sees his arrival.  The pilgrims feel amazed that they are the guest of the most Merciful God.  He or she attends this gathering by the invitation of God, not at the invitation of a government or an organization, nor at the request of a family member or friend.

Hajj is performed because God has invited believers to congregate together.  Regardless of the place of birth, nationality, ethnicity, gender, or status, all are welcome, and all are equal in the sight of God.  The Muslims gather to meet one another and demonstrate to each other, and the world that they are united.  Unity in diversity.  They are united by their worship of One God.

“O humankind!  We have created you from a male and a female, and made you into nations and tribes, that you may know one another.  Verily, the most honorable of you with God is that (believer) who has At-Taqwa (piety, God-consciousness).  Verily, God is All-Knowing, All-Aware.” (Quran 39:13)

Islam is the religion of unity.  Repeatedly throughout the Quran God reminds the believers that they must remain united and seek strength through unity.  Hajj epitomizes this unity.  People from every race and color come together in submission to the will of God.  Muslims are one brotherhood and they come together with a sense of purpose and a desire for peace.

“The believers are nothing else but brothers (in Islam).  So make reconciliation between your brothers, and fear God, that you may receive mercy.” (Quran 39:10)

“And hold fast, all of you together, to the Rope of God (this Quran), and be not divided among yourselves, and remember God’s Favour on you, for you were enemies one to another but He joined your hearts together, so that, by His Grace, you became brethren (in Islam), and you were on the brink of a pit of Fire, and He saved you from it.  Thus God makes His Ayat (proofs, evidence, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.,) clear to you, that you may be guided.” (Quran 3:103)

Hajj is the largest annual gathering of Muslims; it is the largest gathering of people united by the peacefulness and serenity that is Islam.    Anything that disturbs the peacefulness of Hajj is prohibited.  No matter what is happening in the material world at Hajj, peace prevails.

Muslims gather together and their diversity is a wonder to behold.  The old stand with the young, the rich stand with the poor, people of all colors and nationalities stand shoulder to shoulder in prayer and perform rituals side by side.  Prophet Muhammad, may the mercy and blessings of God be upon him, said, “In their love, kindness, and compassion for each other, the believers are like a human body.  Muslims at Hajj are one people, they are a soothing sea of humanity, gathered together to worship One God.  Muslims turn their faces in one direction and submit to the will of God.  They are united by their love of God, and united in their diversity.

Longing for Haj and Preparing Early for it

The preparation for Hajj is among the important issues linked to Ramadan. We should make an early start in order to get ready for it so that Allaah The Almighty may guide us to perform Hajj to His Sacred House. Just as one should get ready for Ramadan in order to attain the mercy and forgiveness of Allaah The Exalted and to be saved from Hell in this great season of forgiveness, one should start preparing for Hajj well in advance as well. If one does not start preparing early, then even if Allaah The Almighty decrees Hajj for him, his Hajj may not be Hajj Mabroor (an accepted Hajj) which is not equaled to anything upon which the sun rises as mentioned in a narration from the traditions of the Prophet, sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ).
Early preparation for the season of Hajj, the season of forgiveness and great salvation
We should all acquire knowledge of the various aspects of the Hajj for several reasons:
The first is that if Allaah The Exalted guides man to perform Hajj, then he is ready for it, and he comes back from it with his sins and misdeeds obliterated. He returns as sinless as a new-born child that has just been delivered by his mother, as mentioned by the Prophet, sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) in the Saheeh of Al-Bukhaari and Muslim.
Otherwise, he would be like a person who lives through Ramadan without being forgiven. If man does not get ready for Ramadan in time, when Ramadan comes, he tries to adapt to fasting and performing Qiyaam till Ramadan is over. Just when he tries to taste the sweetness of obedience, the sweetness of Qiyaam, the sweetness of Thikr, the sweetness of the Quran, and when he begins to do the good deeds related to Ramadan, he finds that Ramadan is over. That is why people should get ready for these days and seasons early, so that these seasons arrive and they are ready to receive the mercy of Allaah The Almighty. Thus, they receive more of the mercy and forgiveness of Allaah The Almighty, and feel closer to Allaah The Exalted and good deeds. However, if death approaches him and he is not ready for the mercy, forgiveness and blessings of Allaah The Almighty, when will he ever attain them?
The second reason is that if one prepares for these days with righteousness and good deeds, perhaps Allaah may guide him and bestow upon him the blessing of Hajj. This is if He finds him keen on attaining the reward of this great obligation which is one of the obligations of Islam if He finds him keen, truthful and sincere in seeking this season which is one of the seasons of forgiveness. Perhaps Allaah The Almighty may, out of His generosity, grant him the blessing of going to His Sacred House.
However, if the season arrives and there are people who are not engaged in learning about Hajj, and it does not cross their minds even once, and who feel that they cannot perform Hajj and do not even think of performing it – this should not be the state of a believer. Rather, one of the most important factors by which Allaah The Almighty carries man to His Sacred House is longing for this House. That is to say that when a man has this feeling of longing, Allaah The Almighty carries him there regardless of the reasons, regardless of the impediments he was thinking of, regardless of the obstacles he meets and regardless of the preparations he reflects upon such as money, visa and so on. Allaah The Almighty drives all these cares away from him all of a sudden. That is why if someone asks: How can one prepare these days for the season of Hajj and great forgiveness whose days are approaching us; namely the months of Hajj which we are living now?
It is said that the first thing with which one gets ready is longing. If one does not have the feeling of longing and yearning for the House of Allaah The Almighty, this is evidence that he has no longing to meet Allaah The Exalted, nor for the Hereafter. Rather, his heart is tough, hard and distant and this deprives him of the good deeds and great acts that bring him closer to Allaah The Almighty which He grants to those who are longing, loving and feel sad when prevented and deprived for many years from reaching the House of Allaah The Almighty.
Hence, the first thing with which man gets ready is yearning and longing for the House of Allaah The Almighty. If he does not feel longing or yearning, where is his longing for Allaah The Exalted? He will remain in this state of deprivation, remoteness, and disinclination between himself and Allaah The Almighty.
Therefore, this is the first thing with which man prepares himself to be granted the blessings of Allaah The Almighty. If Allaah The Almighty wants a slave to visit His House and attain the honor of this visit and this great rank of the religion, He enables all the factors that bring this about.
Many times we hear about and watch the journeys of those who have the longing for Allaah The Exalted.

Allaah The Almighty arranges for them what they themselves did not expect, such as money, traveling and visa and such other issues which may act as impediments or obstacles. Such obstacles and impediments do not exist for Allaah The Almighty, who only has to say to anything: “Be” and it is. In the story of Zakariyya may Allaah exalt his mention he recited this amazing supplication (which means): {and my wife has been barren, so give me from Yourself an heir.}[Quran 19:5] The verse means, my wife cannot give birth and I want to have a child! My wife is barren but Your mercy, power, and might are not compared to anything and this power and might are in charge of everything and capable of making everything possible. Allaah The Almighty Says (what means):{His command is only when He intends a thing that He says to it, “Be,” and it is.} [Quran 36:82] This meaning also applies to Hajj and other things as well.

Those who long for Allaah The Exalted, for His House and for being honored with visiting these places, the places of the endeavor of the righteous, gatherings of the sincere slaves of Allaah The Almighty, and the places of mercy where tears are shed and obstacles are removed, should offer something to prove their longing. This longing appears in the good deeds with which they wish Allaah The Almighty would carry them and take them to His House, and that Allaah the Generous and the highest grants them this visit, from which one returns with his sins forgiven and himself as sinless as a newborn baby.

Ramadan Prayers (Prayer to Seek Pardon from Sin)

Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, marks a period of fasting and deep reflection for Muslims worldwide.
Since the Islamic calendar is lunar, the fasting for Ramadan will start from either 17 or 18 June, based on when the moon is sighted.
In the 30-day period, all Muslims abstain from having food and drinks starting from sunrise to sunset. During the period of fasting, Muslims also tend to abstain from smoking and sexual activities.
After the fasting period, on the next new moon day, Muslims will celebrate the end of Ramadan with a day-long celebration known as Eid-ul Fitr around 17 July.

Ramadan is also a season of prayer. Here are the top 10 prayers to help the believers feel closer to God.

Prayer for Forgiveness

Observant Muslims see Ramadan as a time for seeking forgiveness from God for all their sins and transgressions. Teachings in The Quran and in The Hadiths (sayings of Prophet Muhammad) clearly state that during the period of Ramadan, the sins of believers who engage in sincere worship and repentance will be forgiven.
Here is a prayer by Abdullah-ibn Amar, a companion of Prophet Muhammad:
“Allahumma inni as’aluka birahmatika al-lati wasi’at kulli shay’in an taghfira li.” [Oh Allah, I ask You by Your mercy which envelopes all things, that You forgive me.]

Special Prayers

The Tarawih prayers are a special type of prayer, performed in cycles of movement (standing, bowing, prostrating, sitting). During Ramadan, attending Tarawih prayers is the best way to grow in closeness to God.

Prayers of Zikr (Dhikr)

Zikr, or prayers recited over and over again in the remembrance of God, is an integral part of a pious Muslims’ life. The Zikr prayers are a great way to connect with God while doing any mundane chores of daily life such as driving or while in the kitchen.
Repeating simple expressions such as Subhan’allah [Glorious is God], Alhamdulillah [Thanks be to God], Astaghfirullah [I seek forgiveness of God] and Allahu Akbar [God is the Greatest] can make oneself aware about the greatness of God.

Prayer of Mercy

Ramadan is considered auspicious that Muslims believe that any man, who seeks God with a pure heart, his prayer will be heard.
Reciting a simple prayer such as: “Rabbigh-fir war hum wa anta khair ur rahimeen.” [Oh my Lord and Sustainer, please forgive me and be merciful to me. You are the best amongst those who show mercy] can draw one closer to his Maker.

Prayer to Seek Pardon from Sin

In the second 10 days of Ramadan, a prayer, which is from the Quran, was recommended by the Prophet Muhammad to be recited for seeking God’s blessing and forgiveness of sins.
“Allahumma innaka afuwwun tuhibbul afwa fa’fu anni.” [Oh Allah indeed you are the greatest pardoner and you like the act of pardoning. Hence, please forgive us.]

Prayer of Repentance

Prophet Muhammad has particularly mentioned about this prayer, which is to be recited during the last 10 days of Ramadan as much as possible.
“Astaghfirullaha rabbi min kulli zambin wa atabu ilaih.” [I seek forgiveness of all my sins from Allah who is my lord and sustainer and I return back in repentance to him alone.]

Prayers on Laylat al-Qadr

Laylat al-Qadr, in Islamic belief, is the night when the first verses of the Quran were revealed.
As per Islamic belief, whoever prays by heart “Laa ilaha il-lal lahu Muhammadur Rasulullah” [There is no god but Allah and Muhammad is his messenger] will be forgiven for all their sins.

Prayer During Bedtime

Before going to bed, one must recite “Subhanallahi wa’l hamdu lillaahi wa laa ilaaha illallaahu wallahu akbar ” [Glory be to Allah, and praise be to Allah; there is no god but Allah, and Allah is the Greatest].This is equal to doing Haj and Umra, it is believed.

Personal Prayers

Ramadan is a great month for understanding the will of God. Praying and subjecting oneself to his will helps us grow in closeness with the Creator.
